Skin age is not the same as your birthday
Chronological age counts years. Skin age describes how your skin currently looks and behaves: how firm it is, how even the tone is, how deep the lines are and how well it holds water. Two people born in the same year can sit a decade apart, because the things that age skin are mostly habits and exposure rather than time on its own.
What pushes skin age up
Unprotected sun exposure is the single biggest contributor and accounts for a large share of visible facial ageing. After that come smoking, short or broken sleep, chronic stress, a diet high in sugar, dehydration and a barrier damaged by over exfoliating. Most of these leave visible marks long before you would think of them as a problem.
How the estimate is made
Radien reads a single selfie and scores the visible signals that move with age: fine lines and wrinkles, firmness, texture, pore visibility, pigmentation and evenness of tone. Those scores are combined into an estimated skin age and placed next to your real age. It is an estimate built from what is visible in a photo, not a laboratory measurement.
What you can change, and how fast
Hydration and barrier repair respond quickest, often within two to four weeks. Tone and pigmentation take longer, usually two to three months of consistent sun protection. Firmness and fine lines move slowest and need months rather than weeks. Knowing which lever moves at which speed is what keeps people going instead of quitting in week three.
Daily sun protection does more than any serum
If you change only one thing, make it broad spectrum SPF every morning, including on cloudy days and indoors near windows. No active ingredient outruns ongoing UV damage. This is also why Radien pairs your skin age with the UV index where you actually are, so the reminder arrives on the days it matters most.
A higher number is information, not a verdict
Skin age is meant to be a benchmark you can move, not a judgement on your face. The useful part is the trend. Re-test every week or two and watch the direction: a single reading tells you where you start, and the line across two months tells you whether your routine is doing anything.
When to see a professional instead
A skin age estimate is cosmetic guidance. A mole that changes, a lesion that will not heal, persistent painful acne or a sudden change in your skin all deserve a dermatologist rather than an app. Radien is built to sit alongside professional care, not to replace it.
